SurroMed wins Bio-IT World’s 2004 Best Practices Award for Knowledge Management and Collaboration

SurroMed, Inc. and Spotfire Inc. today announced that SurroMed recently won Bio-IT World magazine’s 2004 Best Practices Award for its innovative use of Spotfire DecisionSite™ and DecisionSite Posters software to speed development of new “personalized medicines” through online collaboration with its partners.

“Our award stemmed from our ability to launch a new service that transcended delivery of analysis results in static report form, creating a collaborative research library for sharing analytical results and drug discovery expertise with our customers and partners,” said Keith Joho, Ph.D., SurroMed’s vice president of informatics and bioanalytical operations. “Our new DecisionSite Posters-based Internet service is the fastest, most productive way to make analytic decisions from biomarker data.”

SurroMed ’s customers provide clinical or pre-clinical samples which are analyzed in SurroMed’s Biomarker Discovery Laboratory using SurroMed’s integrated platform for proteomic, metabolomic and cytometric analysis. SurroMed mines the resulting bioanalytic data using its proprietary suite of informatics tools to identify candidate biological markers. SurroMed’s award-winning application uses DecisionSite Posters to create a secure, collaborative environment for sharing analysis of biological marker data with its partners and customers.

DecisionSite Posters is an easy-to-use Web application that enables sharing of live visual analysis of biomarker data between SurroMed and its partners and customers securely over the Internet. Biomarkers are biochemical indicators in blood and other biological samples that enable more efficient discovery and development of new therapeutics, as well as development of diagnostic tests for early disease detection, accurately determining disease sub-types, and predicting and monitoring responses to therapy.

According to Bio-IT World editors, SurroMed was recognized for its noteworthy innovation and results in the research, development and manufacture of bio-IT-enabled therapeutics and diagnostics, as well as the underlying business strategies that support them. SurroMed’s entry was peer-reviewed by a panel of 10 expert judges and selected from among 36 lengthy submissions from organizations ranging from large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to academic institutions, detailing best practices in one of five categories. SurroMed won the grand prize trophy for the “Knowledge Management and Collaboration” category.

“Our second annual Best Practices Awards program spotlights the organizations with the most innovative use of life science and information technologies which are streamlining and accelerating the drug discovery research and development process,” said Dr. Kevin Davies, editor in chief, Bio-IT World. “Our goal with this event is to foster a peer-to-peer exchange of information in a scientific community that may one day advance the health and wellness of humanity.”
